How Does the League of Mercy Prepare for Visitation
The Salvation Army has a definite spiritual ministry to the ill, the aged, the discouraged and the lonely.
a. Pray for God's guidance before visitation - either before leaving the Corps community center or at the hospital if the group is meeting there. Observe a quiet moment of prayer as a reminder that we are His ambassadors and dispensers of cheer, hope and encouragement.
b. Exercise care in the selection of songs when members are conducting meetings among the patients.
c. Take care in the selection of suitable Bible messages.
d. Seek divine guidance in the matter of praying with individuals. Never force prayer on a patient. The visitor might say: "Would you like me to pray with you?" When a patient requests prayer, it should be brief and reassuring.
e. Do not argue religious viewpoints with patients. We visit without regard to the patient's creed or doctrine and should not argue religious viewpoints. Each of the major faiths proclaims God as the Father of mankind. Encourage each patient to know and follow God to the best of his/her belief and teaching. When spiritual help is requested, call on a qualified person in the group to minister to the spiritual need of the patient.
