The Salvation Army was founded in London, England, in 1865 by William Booth. It is now an international organization with divisions in 100 countries throughout the world. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

The Salvation Army’s Eastern Territory Responds to Isabel

The Salvation Army’s hurricane relief effort continues in the devastating aftermath of Isabel. Over one million people are still without power and 26 counties are being warned of contaminated water supply.

In addition to the work already being done by the Southern Territory, eight canteens (mobile feeding units) with volunteers and staff have been deployed to North Carolina and Virginia from divisions across The Salvation Army’s Eastern Territory. Canteens from six divisions including Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Pennsylvania, Greater New York, New Jersey, Empire State, and Southern New England have traveled to the storm ravaged areas to lend support.

The canteens will assist with the distribution of food and beverages to those who remain without power in Isabel’s wake.

To further support the relief effort, desperately needed supplies were transported by the canteens to The Salvation Army’s National Capital Division, located just a few blocks from the White House.

In addition to food and water The Salvation Army is offering counseling, shelter and clean-up kits to aid in the extensive clean up.

While actively supporting The Salvation Army’s Southern Territory by relieving exhausted crews from the impacted areas, the Eastern Territory remains available to respond to further requests for assistance. “Volunteers stand ready to go at a moments notice to assist people who experienced the devastation brought on by Hurricane Isabel,” said Roger Rischaway, Territorial Disaster Services Coordinator,“We continue to be ready and prepared to support those in need”.
